Gator Gazette Newsletter - December 2009 News from our Principal Dear
Parents, I didn’t know exactly what to expect from my
first California winter in 15 years – but snow down to the foothills of Mt. Diablo has surpassed any expectations I
may have had! The lower temperatures are taking their toll on students who are not dressed warmly enough. Please
consider layering short-sleeved tops over long sleeves to give students added warmth both in the classroom and outside.
Winter coats or sweatshirts are a must for trips to and from school, and for recesses. We have piles of left-behind coats in the multi-use room’s Lost and Found box. Please look for lost items
now; anything remaining after Friday, December 18th will be donated to a local agency. Labeling your child’s belongings
can be a help in keeping track of them. If you do, please write first and last names on the inside of coats, backpacks
and lunch boxes – not on the outside where a stranger may be able to read it. During the Winter Recess I am hoping that bike racks in the small parking lot will be relocated. Some of them
will be moved to the open area in front of the multi-use room in front of the Gator mural. Others will be moved to the
playground between Kidstop and the alleyway gate. Students who ride bikes or scooters to school should dismount as they
come onto Corritone Court and walk their bikes to the rack. Students who enter through the alley should walk their bikes
from Eveyln and lock them to the racks on the playground. With these changes I hope to reduce congestion and give us
more security for the bikes. I have had the pleasure of reviewing
report cards for each of our Gregory Gardens students. It is wonderful to see that so many of our students are meeting
or exceeding our grade level expectations for academics and citizenship. Others may be struggling in certain areas,
but the good news is they are working hard and trying! I would
like to recognize all of our students for their hard work – and to remind all of us that sometimes the deepest learning
comes from making mistakes. So don’t ever be afraid to try! Parents, your contributions for helping your
child establish routines for getting homework done and back to school are invaluable. Establishing routines now will
help your child accomplish goals throughout his/her life. You
may have noticed the boxes for Food Donations on campus this month. You will soon be seeing boxes for donations of Warm
Coats that will be shared in our community with those in need. We appreciate any contributions you can make that will
help this winter be less harsh for children and families. Involving children in giving also helps to make them aware
of the needs of others. Through sharing some canned food, a warm coat, a helping hand, or an encouraging smile, we can
all impact the lives of others. I hope each of you have a wonderful
Winter Break and a Happy Holiday Season. We’ll be right
here ready to greet you on January 4th, 2010! Sincerely, Cheryl Kolano News from our PTA President Ahh, December, a month of cold nights, short days, and children in the house who
are usually at school. I am already planning the days between December 18th and January 4th
so that James and Nicholas and I don’t drive each other crazy. I would like to thank the inventers
of bowling and fishing for giving me two great ways to pass the time. If you have never been to Lafayette
Reservoir, I highly recommend it, and not just for fishing. It’s a beautiful spot to just be.
And now that my boys actually enjoy reading, I would like to thank the inventer of that, too. We
will set aside some quiet time each day for some reading, and I know our teachers at Gregory Gardens would appreciate it very
much if you all considered doing the same. At last night’s monthly board meeting, we seated Martha Castaneda in the position of Preschool Liaison.
This is an important development because currently it seems the bridge between Gregory Gardens and Robert Shearer Preschool
does not adequately connect the two entities, and it really should. Martha is committed to being an active
voice for the preschool, and to exploring ways for the preschool to contribute to the PTA and also benefit from all that the
PTA offers. Welcome, Martha! If you have any thoughts regarding the relationship
between Gregory Gardens and Robert Shearer Preschool, and the PTA’s role in that relationship, we would love to hear
them. This year,
one of the goals of GG PTA is to be transparent and available to our members. To that end, we set up the
ggptainfo@gmail.com email address at the beginning of the year. Thank
you for all your questions and comments, and please keep them coming. We are also very close to making
a PTA binder available for members to review. It will contain agendas and minutes from Board and General
meetings, and also our PTA unit’s budget for the year. I have received several requests to post this information to
our PTA website. California PTA specifically forbids us from doing this. The reasons why can be found here:
http://www.capta.org/sections/communication/downloads/communicator-2008-05/WebsitesTheNextGeneration.pdf. But the binder is being assembled now, and will
be available shortly. More to come on that. I look forward to seeing you at the Pasta Dinner
and musical performances on December 15th, and to kicking off the holiday season with this event. Have
a safe and happy winter recess. Paul Bayley Meet your PTA Hi, my name is Susan Hurley and I’m the Hospitality Coordinator for the PTA.
What that means is that I feed you. Well, hopefully, I do more than that. My job is to make sure everyone feels
welcome at PTA events and to provide venues for Gregory Gardens’ families to gather, get to know one another, and build
a sense of community. So, besides providing the treats at PTA General Meetings (yes, if you come, we will feed you!), I organized
the Welcome Back School Picnic, the Welcome Back Brunch for the teachers and staff, and the Parade. I also run the monthly
Coffee Socials. If you haven’t been to a Coffee Social, you should come check it out. They are
held in the school library each month (usually scheduled for the last Friday of each month). Besides offering coffee
and tasty treats, they are a really nice way to meet and socialize with other parents as well as teachers and staff. So, that’s what I do on the PTA Board. Here’s a little bit about
the rest of me. My husband Jeff and I have two Gators – Sarah and Ian MacAskill. Sarah is in third grade
and Ian in second. We moved to Gregory Gardens the summer before my daughter started kindergarten and chose the neighborhood
largely based on the fact that we liked the school. It was a good decision. We love the neighborhood and the kids are
thriving. I work in Berkeley as an epidemiologist for a non-profit cancer center and do research focused on exploring environmental
links to cancer. I’m fortunate in that I have a job with a lot of flexibility which allows me to occasionally
help out in my children’s classrooms, attend a field trip, or help organize a PTA event. This is my first year on the Board. To be honest, before this year I had never even been to a PTA meeting so
I’m a bit wet behind the ears. I have to say though it has been an incredibly rewarding experience to meet
and work with such a talented and hard working group of people. And while there are times that my kids get frustrated
by the time I devote to PTA activities, I can also see that that it makes them proud of me. And, their seeing me so
involved at their school shows them that I value their school and I think it makes them value it more. I also have learned
how much the PTA actually does that I wasn’t even aware of – from helping teachers buy the supplies they
need for their classrooms, to supporting reading, art, technology and other programs that enrich and support our childrens’
education. There are so many things that happen at the school that couldn’t happen without the help of our PTA.
So, if you’re not a member of the PTA, join us! If you are a member but haven’t gotten too involved because
you haven’t really known what is needed or how your time/talents could be used, come to a coffee social or a PTA meeting
or drop us an e-mail (ggptainfo@gmail.com). And finally, I would just like to say thank you to all the
committed, caring and active parents, teachers, and staff at Gregory Gardens who have volunteered their time and or their
money -- you are what make this school so great. Behind the Scenes fundraising update
